GoogleGoogle Maps: What has caused the glowing blue lakes in Indonesia?

Google Maps was launched in 2005 by brothers Lars and Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen and has since evolved into Google Street View.

Many take to the website to try and spot funny images or mysteries sighting across the globe.

It has also captured some of the weirdest natural phenomena in the world that struggle to be explained.

One that has been spotted is some luminescent blue pools found in a volcano.

Found in Indonesia, the bright blue bodies of water can be located in the Kawah Ijen volcano

Found in Indonesia, the bright blue bodies of water can be located in the Kawah Ijen volcano.

The creepy sight shows the glowing lake in the centre of it and is the largest acidic lake in the world with a pH of 0.5.

Many may believe that pools within a volcano are full of red magma and lava, making these confusing, to say the least.

They are so bright in colour thanks to the hydrogen chloride gas which reacts with the water.

But what is the cause of the natural phenomenon?
